This Gluten-Free Apple Crisp with Walnuts is vegan, dairy-free, and easy to make. This recipe is also made with good-for-you ingredients like apples, rolled oats, and walnut “flour”. This post was sponsored by California Walnuts, but all opinions are my own.
I am SO excited to share this Gluten-Free Apple Crisp with you all today because my love for all things apple cinnamon runs DEEP.
What makes an apple crisp different from an apple crumble?
I’m glad you asked!
Apple crumbles typically don’t include oats or nuts. Apple crumbles are more similar to a streusel with the topping containing flour, sugar, and butter.
Apple crisps, on the other hand, contain a layer of delicious oats and nuts. In this Gluten-Free version, I used gluten-free rolled oats, a walnut “flour” in the filling, and topped it with more walnuts.
Why I chose to use walnuts in my recipe:
- An excellent source of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), the plant-based omega-3 fatty acid (2.5g) – the most ALA of any other tree nut.
- 4g of protein
- 2g of fiber
- A good source of magnesium (45mg)
Basically, this is a sneaky way to get your family to eat more nutrient-dense foods without them noticing. 😉
And most importantly, walnuts taste good! Now that we’ve discussed the best nut to use in your apple crisp, let’s talk about which apples to use.
What Apples are best for apple crisps?
When choosing the apples for your apple crisp, go with a crisp and tart variety that stands up well to baking.
Granny Smith and Honeycrisp are great options! You can also try mixing the two together if you’ve got both on hand. Golden Delicious is another great option as well.
For my recipe, I used Honeycrisp because I already had some on hand.
Can I refrigerate my apple crisp?
Yes! Apple crisps can easily be stored for one week in an air-tight container in your refrigerator.
I actually LOVE eating this gluten-free apple walnut crisp cold. I serve is over some yogurt with a little peanut butter and it makes for the best easy breakfast or late-night treat
Of course, it’s also delicious heated up over some ice cream.
I’m also guilty of eating it with a spoon on its own.
