This healthy sesame ginger vinaigrette recipe is tangy, fresh, and made with clean ingredients like tahini, ginger, and a splash of orange juice. This no sugar added salad dressing is perfect year-round!
Salad season is officially here! I have been making salads for lunch almost daily and thankfully haven’t gotten tired of them yet.
The key to a delicious salad is definitely the toppings you choose and more importantly, the salad dressing you choose.
Who agrees? Typically, I dress my salad in a little olive oil, balsamic, and a whole lot of lemon.
There’s nothing wrong with that combo, but it sure does get boring.
It was time for something a bit more flavorful, and this easy recipe for sesame ginger vinaigrette definitely did the trick!
How to make a simple Asian chicken salad to go with Asian Vinaigrette
The secret to making a delicious salad is using fresh, wholesome ingredients. There’s nothing more satisfying than crisp, vibrant veggies or juicy, tender chicken in your salad. If you’re trying to include more salads into your diet or convert someone into a salad lover, be sure to grab high-quality ingredients.
- Chicken. I bought a rotisserie chicken at the grocery store because they were on sale. I typically roast or bake my own chicken breast for meal prep, so this was a first for me!
- Sugar snap peas. Sugar snap peas always remind me of Asian dishes. They’re delicious in a stir fry (like my 15 Minute Shrimp Stir Fry or Sweet & Spicy Asian Chicken Sheet Pan Dinner) or tossed in a salad. They offer a crunch that all salads need!
- Mushrooms. Mushrooms not only contrast with the sugar snap peas in texture, but I love the way they soak up the sesame ginger vinaigrette. It’s a burst of flavor!
- Carrots. The only Asian salad I’ve had that doesn’t include carrots is seaweed salad. They’re a must in Asian style salads! I love the sweetness and color they bring to a dish.
- Broccoli slaw. If you don’t like broccoli slaw or don’t see any at your store, feel free to swap out for red cabbage slaw. Both are tasty!
- Mandarin oranges. Mandarin oranges give a burst of sweetness to this simple Asian salad. See below for my tips on how to use the juice from mandarin oranges to cut back on ingredients in the sesame vinaigrette.
- Mixed greens. Feel free to use whatever greens you have on hand. For this salad, I used baby mixed greens.
Add all of your ingredients to a bowl, pour the desired amount of dressing on top, and toss until evenly coated!
Ingredients for healthy no sugar added sesame ginger vinaigrette
This salad dressing recipe calls for 6 simple ingredients. If you have any dietary restrictions, see below for some ingredient substitutions.
- Tahini. The bulk of the flavor in this recipe comes from the tahini. Tahini is a sesame paste that is delicious in both savory and sweet recipes. Don’t believe me? Try these Tahini Chocolate Chunk Blondies or Oatmeal Tahini Chocolate Chunk Cookies!
- Rice wine vinegar. Rice vinegar is less acidic than white distilled vinegar. Rice vinegar has a delicate, mild, and somewhat sweet flavor. If you don’t have any on hand, try substituting rice wine vinegar with apple cider vinegar.
- Soy sauce. Soy sauce can be substituted with coconut aminos or tamari.
- Orange juice. The orange juice in this recipe helps balance the acidity of the vinegar, if you don’t have any orange juice on hand, try adding a touch of sugar or honey to balance it out. When I make my simple Asian salad (listed above), I simply toss in a splash of the mandarin orange juice.
- Ground ginger. I rarely buy fresh ginger, but if you have fresh ginger on hand, feel free to use that instead!
- Others: ground red pepper, water, and salt.
How to make healthy sesame ginger dressing
Add all of your ingredients to a bowl and whisk together OR add ingredients to a nutri-ninja and blend!
I chose to go the nutri-ninja route because it’s way easier in my opinion; however, not everyone has access to one and a whisk will do just fine!
I also found these cute little mason jars at Kroger and they’re perfect for storing your dressings. You could even add all the ingredients to one of these and shake it up instead of dirtying a bowl.

Ginger Sesame Salad Dressing
- 1/3 Cup Tahini
- 4 Tbsp Rice Wine Vinegar
- 3 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1 Tbsp Orange Juice Tip! I use the juice from the mandarin oranges to cut back on ingredients!
- 1/3 Cup Water
- 1 Tsp Ground Ginger
- 1/2 Tsp Salt
- 1/4 Tsp Ground Red Pepper
- Whisk ingredients together. Add to an airtight container and store in the fridge.
