How To Remove Burn Marks From Baking Sheets

Learn the easiest way to remove the burn marks from your baking pans, while using the cleanest and safest ingredients we can find!

There’s nothing worse when you finish baking something to take it out of the oven and it’s stuck. Then once you go to scrap your meal (or cookies) off, there are burnt crumbs that just will not come off!

I mean you put in the elbow grease and still these burnt areas look as if you haven’t done a thing!

While there are a million different concoctions you can make to use as a household cleaner, you know that may not be the healthiest thing. Combining household cleaners can actually be very harmful, and not just for your skin!

When certain cleaners come in contact with each other, such as ammonia and bleach they create toxic fumes. Even though your skin may not be burning, you are breathing in what could be a deadly gas!

I lead with all of this to say, it’s best to clean your burnt baking sheets with the least harmful chemicals you can find, chances are they are going to have to spend some time soaking, which means, as mentioned, you don’t want to expose your family to toxic compounds because our planet is filled with enough of those already!

How to Clean Burnt Baking Sheet Without Harmful Ingredients

After you remove your baking sheet from the oven, you can try using a pan scraper to get what you can off.

Then either fill your sink or just the pan (make sure it’s on a level surface) with a 1:1 ratio of baking soda and white vinegar or baking soda and hydrogen peroxide.

If you have never seen this reaction before, it bubbles up and for a second you might just feel like a scientist.

Let the pan sit for at least 30 minutes to an hour. If the baking sheet is in really bad condition, let it soak overnight.

Then use a scrubber to remove the burnt debris.

What Kind of Scrubber Should I Use?

This really depends on the material your baking sheets are made of and you may want to test a small area before letting it soak.

The most abrasive scrubber is going to be a steel wool pad, which works really well, but will probably scratch your pans.

Scrub Daddy is a great option and the other type of kitchen sponges that has a soft and rougher side.

Are There Any Other Cleaners I Can Use?

As we discussed before, there are tons of cleaning products you CAN use, it just depends on how much you care about the ingredients.

Products such as Comet, Bar Keeper’s Friend, and Oven Cleaner will definitely do the trick in a shorter period of time, but are much more abrasive.

Here’s your warning, it’s possible that these cleaners could ruin your pans for good! If you do choose this route, use kitchen nitrile gloves, do not leave the cleaner on for more than a few minutes, and it’s probably best you wear a mask!

How to Keep Baking Sheets Clean?

So my best recommendation, you already know, is to not have anything burn on them to start with.
