Most meatball recipes use your standard breadcrumbs, which depending on the flavor, the seasoning, and be a little overpowering and you may have a hard time finding a gluten-free option. My version of Air Fryer Meatballs is gluten-free because I am using Rice Crumbs

Rice crumbs are made from ground puffed rice and can be substituted in any recipe you may have that uses the popular breadcrumbs. You can purchase rice crumbs for your air fryer meatballs at Trader Joes, which is one of my favorite places to shop for healthy and whole ingredients! Also, rice crumbs are free from extra additives and are Kosher certified, along with no added sugar.

How is Making Air Fryer Meatballs different from the traditional method?

If you are new to the air fryer world or are contemplating purchasing one you may not know exactly what the benefits are. Air fryers cook food by convection (hot air blowing around the food) and take less time when cooking. I have this one and love it!

The main reason many people choose air fryers is to cut back on traditional fried foods because you don’t need to use oil, or at least not nearly as much and still get that delicious “fried” flavor and texture.

Ingredients for Air Fried Meatballs

Ground beef – If you want to substitute ground turkey or chicken you can, but I have not tried those yet. You may need a little more rice crumbs to make sure the texture is just right and the meatballs stay together.

Rice Crumbs – As I mentioned previously, you can find these at Trader Joes. If you can’t find a gluten-free option, you can make your own meatball breadcrumbs by using gluten-free bread. Just toast a few pieces in the oven or air fryer, then using a food processor or blender, turn them into crumbs. The measurement will stay the same.

Others: Garlic powder, onion powder, minced onion, egg, salt, and pepper.

Tips for Making Meatballs in the Air Fryer

  • Using parchment paper liners make for super easy cleanup. Just be sure to find them in the correct size for your air fryer. Also, don’t preheat the air fryer with the parchment paper liner. This sometimes causes it to fly around when you push the basket in. Place the meatballs on top of the paper after it has preheated.
  • Anytime you air fry food, don’t overload your basket or tray. This will cause an increase in cook time and also your food will not be as crispy. The basket needs room for the air to circulate.air fryer meatballs in sauce with a wooden spatula in a white bowl

Can you Freeze Air Fried Meatballs?

Yes. You can freeze the meatballs in two ways. Either make extra and freeze them raw or freeze the leftovers after cooking. Store them flat and in a single layer by using Ziploc bags, reusable bags, or a vacuum sealer. Either way, the next time you bring the air fried meatballs out for reheating, use a lower cooking temperature. If your air fryer has a reheat option, that is the perfect setting to use.
